WILLIAM TATTON WINTER (1855-1928)

'La Puerta Fuenterrabia'

William Tatton Winter was born on 2 February 1855 at no. 58 Warrington Street (next door to the Boston Arms Inn), Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire (Great Britain), a small town near the Lancashire/Yorkshire border where the local industries were cotton spinning, weaving, brewing and the manufacture of hats and machinery. Studied at the Manchester Academy of Fine Art and joined the Manchester Athenaeum Graphic Club. He also took up teaching, his sketching classes in the country proving most popular on account of his genial good nature and helpfulness to his students.

Although his reputation as an artist is based on his success as a watercolourist, he was also an oil painter, and carried out some etchings which were published by the Museum Galleries.
